CLS QUICK REVIEW
She has more than 30 years experience directing clinical laboratory science
programs and teaching all disciplines. Her students have successfully passed
certification examinations at both the technician and technologist levels. Of the
hundreds of students who graduated from programs she directed, 98% passed
their certification exam on the first attempt. Many scored in the top 5% of the
nation, some even achieving the highest individual score for their exam cycle.
Valerie served as program director for MLS programs at City Hospital in
Meadville, PA, Hamot Medical Center in Erie, PA, and most recently at St.
Petersburg College in St. Petersburg, FL where she directed the development of
one of the profession's first online programs.
She began writing review books for the profession in 1999. Her first, Medical
Laboratory Technology, Pearls of Wisdom was a popular title with students and
was followed by a second edition in 2003. In 2006 the content was
reorganized, updated, and published under the new title, Quick Review Q & A’s
for Clinical Laboratory Science Examinations. The second edition, published in
2015, was expanded to include a chapter on Molecular Diagnostics.
Valerie is also the author of the popular Quick Review Cards for Clinical
Laboratory Science Examinations and a contributor to Modern Blood Banking
& Transfusion Practices, 6th edition, by Denise Harmening.
Valerie earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Hood
College in Frederick, MD and graduated from the Mercy
Hospital School of Medical Technology in San Diego, CA. She
earned a Master of Education degree from Gannon University
in Erie, PA. She is certified as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by
the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) and is a
